40 Under Forty FAQs


Who is eligible?

Any Southernite who is under the age of 40 as of January 1 of the of the list’s year (2017) is eligible. To be eligible for this year’s 40 under Forty, a nominee must not be over age 40 as of January 1, 2017.

What makes a 40 Under Forty?

We’re looking for Southernite business and professional leaders who have achieved success and excelled in their field before the age of 40. An ideal 40 Under Forty candidate is a Southernite who has demonstrated excellence in their community, leadership and initiative in career pursuit and dedication to the mission of Southern University.

How do I submit a nomination?

The nomination period has been extended to January 5, 2018. All nominations must be submitted via the online nomination form. No other forms of submission will be accepted.

What do I need to submit a nomination?

You should have the following ready to go to complete the nomination form:

  • Your name, phone number and email address
  • The nominee’s full name, mobile number, email address, current job position and company information, date of birth and graduating year
  • A clearly defined sense of why the nominee should be considered for Forty Under 40 recognition.

Any guidelines for submitting a nomination?

Nominations are reviewed by a panel of independent community and business leaders who are searching for information about honorees who have made significant contributions within their respective discipline. Nominations that provide detailed information about the nominees are best suited for selection.

How are honorees selected?

Those recognized each year as the Southernite 40 Under Forty are chosen based in part on input from a confidential third party panel and followed by a panel of Southern University System leaders. The goal is to select a diverse list that represents a broad spectrum of the Southernite professional community.

Can someone be nominated as a 40 Under Forty multiple times?

Yes. However, one can be nominated multiple times but this will not increase the chances of being selected. 40 Under Forty is not a popularity contest – it is based on the content of the submission and the nominees’ qualifications and accomplishments. One quality/substantive nomination is sufficient.

 Can a Southernite be honored as a 40 Under Forty multiple times?

No. 40 Under Forty is a one-time honor.

What is required of those who are selected?

Honorees must make themselves available for an interview and photo shoot prior to the celebration event in July 2018. It is also important that they are able to attend our Honoree Gala  recognizing our 40 Under Forty honorees.

When is the deadline?

The deadline for Class of 2017 nominations has been extended to January 5, 2018 . No exceptions to the deadline will be allowed at this time.

Can I fax, mail or hand delivery my nomination?

All materials must be submitted via the online nomination form. No nominations sent by email, fax, postal mail or hand delivery will be accepted.

Can I save my nomination form and come back to it?

No. Once you start the form, you must complete it or start over another time.

When will I find out who the honorees are?

The list of honorees will be announced via SU Alumni Federation communication outlets in January 2018. Until then the list will remain confidential. The honorees will be recognized at the 40 Under Forty Honoree Event in July 2018. Honorees will be profiled in the Spring issue and highlighted in the Winter issue of The Southernite Magazine
